Pizza Week is underway … and it’s insane. This year the Portland Mercury wrangled up a whopping 34 restaurants to offer $2 slices all over town. When Pizza Week started a few years ago there were a lot more basic cheese-and-red sauce offerings … but my how times have changed. Remember that gum in “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” that tastes like a Three Course Meal? That’s what this year’s wacky Pizza Week has become. And it’s very fun. For example:
- “The PILF” at Bella Pizza (American and mozzarella cheese, ground beef, onions, tomatoes, pickles, shredded iceberg lettuce, and Thousand Island dressing.)
- “Stadium Special” at Blackbird Pizza (Black bean tomato base, vegan nacho cheese sauce, soyrizo, black olives, tomatoes, pickled jalapeños, green onions, vegan sour cream, and tortilla chips.) (Pictured above)
- “The Naanfather” at Fillmore (Tandoori-spiced cauliflower, special secret sauce, herbs, and roasted peanuts.)
- “Snake River Party Boi” at Sizzle Pie (Chipotle red sauce, red onion pico, vegan pastor, aji amarillo sauce, and cilantro.)
And many more! Vegetarian and vegan Pizza Week options are available at many (but not all) spots. It runs through Saturday. Let me know your favorite slice!
