Susie Knows: A Rummer-style Mid-century in Salem

Just Listed in our state capital! This 4 bed, 2.5 bath 1962 Rummer-style home on a hilltop awaits your mid-century magic wand. The best attributes are still intact: Soaring ceilings, exposed beams, open floor plan, a dramatic 360° fireplace and a wall of windows overlooking the fabulous atrium sanctuary.

The sellers have always believed their home was a true Rummer but don’t have the documentation to prove it. What’s a Rummer? Well, Robert Rummer is Oregon’s answer to Frank Lloyd Wright or Joseph Eichler … titans of mid-century modern architecture. Robert Rummer (b. 1927) developed around 750 homes in the ’60s and ’70s in Portland and nearby that, in his words, “bring the inside out or the outside in.”

Rummer was an early pioneer of the now sought-after open floor plan, inspired by Eichler homes upon visiting California. Gary Higginbotham says of Eichler’s designs: “[They] looked nothing like the average ranch home of the 1950s. An Eichler home used enormous posts and beams to hold up the structure, thereby allowing entire walls of windows. This, along with vaulted ceilings, made for incredible amounts of natural light. Radiant floor heat, minimalist design and low-pitch or flat roofs rounded out the Eichler approach.”

Safe to say, if this Salem one-level isn’t a true Rummer, its builder was certainly inspired by Rummer and Eichler.

It’s in a great location for Salemites too: 0.4 miles to Morningside Park, 1 mile to Commercial St. dining, 1.5 miles to the Salem airport, 2 miles to downtown & state offices!

This home is calling the aficionado who wants to participate in their own polish of a mid century gem. If you want to learn more about this awesome home, give me a call!
