Susie Knows the Portland Art Museum

Run…Don’t…Walk to the current exhibitions at the Portland Art Museum! Wow. Wow. Wow.

  • The LAIKA exhibit is a sprawling display of hundreds of tiny heads, miniature sets and hand-cranked doodads that were used to make the stop-motion gems like “Coraline,” “ParaNorman,” “The Boxtrolls” and “Kubo and the Two Strings.” It’s a rare glimpse behind the movie-magic-making curtain that’s not to be missed. • The Wyeth exhibit: A powerhouse family of painters from three generations.  On display through January 28.

  • And then you’re in a for a real treat: Go down to the bottom level and marvel at the three wild + gigantic Raqib Shaw paintings. From a distance they seem to each be a lush and flowery idyll. But as you get closer … you start to notice the crazy animals peeking out, fighting with each other, birds yanking intestines out of lions and jaguars! Oh… and they’re covered in rhinestones!
