Susie Knows the Albina Library (Portland, OR)

Have you seen the new library?! Northeast Portland has a brand-new landmark to celebrate: the reimagined Albina Library. After years of planning, community input and construction, the library reopened in July 2025 as the largest new public library the city has seen in more than a century.

What makes Albina special is the way it blends history and innovation. The original 1913 Carnegie building, long a neighborhood anchor, has been carefully restored and strengthened. Around it rises a striking expansion that quadruples the library’s size to over 30,000 square feet. The result feels both rooted in the past and ready for the future.

There’s something for everyone here. Families with young children will appreciate the early learning and play area, one of the largest in the county system. Teens have their own dedicated room stocked with technology, study space and gaming equipment. Adults can find quiet reading nooks, collaborative meeting rooms, or simply a spot to enjoy the view. For visitors with sensory needs, a calming sensory room provides an inclusive place to recharge.

Albina’s expansion also reflects how libraries have evolved. Yes, the shelves are full of books, but the building offers so much more: laptops and tablets for checkout, improved Wi-Fi, self-service options, and art installations created by local artists. The spacious 1,800-square-foot event rooms can host everything from cultural performances to small business workshops. Outdoors, a secure garden courtyard provides green space in the middle of the city.

The Albina Library isn’t just bigger—it’s more welcoming, inclusive and adaptable. For families, students, creatives and anyone who loves to learn, it’s a new living room for the neighborhood. It stands as a reminder that public spaces, when designed with intention and collaboration, can strengthen community bonds and inspire generations to come.
