Susie Knows the Perfect Picnic (Portland, OR)

July is National Picnic Month and my absolute favorite time to be in Portland’s parks. Here’s a stroll through four PDX neighborhood gems—Cathedral Park, Sellwood Park, Laurelhurst Park and Willamette Park—plus a peek at the summer happenings they’re hosting and nearby spots to pick up snacks!

My daughters – picnic pros!

🏞️ Cathedral Park

I love the soaring arches of the St. Johns Bridge reflected in the Willamette. Cathedral Park is ideal for riverside picnics, kayaking or just catching a concert on the little outdoor stage. There’s a boat ramp, off-leash dog area, floating dock, trails, benches and swimming spots.

Upcoming highlights: The annual Cathedral Park Jazz Festival jams July 18–20 under the bridge with free jazz & blues, food vendors, artisan booths and a beer & wine garden. It’s one of Portland’s most magical outdoor festivals!

Takeout: Tienda Santa Cruz is the place to go! Mosey past the pinatas and grocery shelves and head to the back of the store where the super-affordable menu has something for everyone whether you’re the #1 carnivore or bean-based vegetarian. Tacos, tamales, burritos and more!

🌳 Sellwood Park

This shady Southeast treasure is less fuss, more play. With expansive lawns, mature trees, playgrounds and easy access to the Oaks Bottom wildlife refuge & Oaks Park, it’s perfect for a family day out. I personally love the tennis and new pickleball courts (8 Outdoor hard courts, free, permanent lines, bring your own net!)

Upcoming Highlights: August 24 @6:30pm | Too Loose – Zydeco, Cajun, southern-style music that is guaranteed to make you dance!

Takeout: Piknik Park Food Carts & Beer Garden

My current favorites are the Moroccan fare at Taste of Casablanca, Korean at Jin Dak, Sellwood Fish & Chips and Uncle Tsang’s Vegetarian Kitchen which has an adoring following within the PDX veg community.

🌸 Laurelhurst Park

Ah, my go-to shady grove. I bask under towering trees by the duck pond, toss a Frisbee or grab picnic tables with friends. You’ll also find a playground, sport courts, restrooms, water fountains and a dog-friendly lawn.

July happenings: Kickstand Comedy brings free laughs (almost) every Friday. Blanket drop at 6:00 pm, show starts at 6:30 pm. The next show is 7/18! Free!

Takeout: Hoda’s on Belmont is perfect for sharing with a group. I recommend their hummus, baba ghanoush and skewers! Or grab a Baby Doll pizza just west of the park down Stark. Underrated crust!

🌲 Willamette Park

Located near the Sellwood Bridge, this riverside haven features grassy areas including a huge soccer field, paved paths, a fenced dog area and prime kayaking launch spots. Park now, paddle later! The Willamette Greenway Trail (which runs along the Willamette’s west side) goes straight through this park which makes it a nice spot for cyclists to seek respite!

Views from the Greenway Trail!

Takeout: I like to grab a turkey club from Elephant’s Deli on Corbett or the ~best~ salad rolls & peanut sauce from nearby Thai PK.

My July wish for you: Spread a blanket in the shade of a cedar, sip something cool, hum along with live jazz under the bridge and maybe catch a comedy set! Portland’s parks are alive with community and sunshine—come join us!
