Susie Knows Westmoreland (Portland, OR)

Small town feel in the middle of bustling Portland? Believe it or not, it’s possible in the perfect pocket of Southeast’s Sellwood-Moreland. Bordered by the Willamette River to the west and OR-99E to the east, Sellwood-Moreland (aka Westmoreland) is a cozy residential hub of well-maintained Craftsmans & Victorians with a buzzing main street along SE Milwaukie Ave lined with restaurants and shops. Here are some of my neighborhood favorites as we’ll have a fabulous new listing hitting the market here next week – right in the heart of it all!

DINING & IMBIBING

Saburo’s Sushi – There’s a reason the line around the corner forms at 4:30 for this popular sushi joint! Huge variety and large portions in the rolls, sashimi, nigiri – all the staples plus a few creative extras like the deep fried rolls! Vegetarians have delicious options here too like the giant Budokhan roll stuffed with tempura vegetables & avocado and the Yu-Dofu tofu-mushroom soup.

The Portland Bottle Shop for specialty wine, beer and sandwiches. (Burgers, portobello sandwiches, salmon dip, kale radicchio caesar & a great rotating tap selection of local brews.)

Papa Haydn for the desserts of your dreams and a pretty great Happy Hour with a spritz!

Brunch at Bastion (Avocado toast, tuna crudo, gazpacho & exotic lattes.)

The foodie options are endless:

FUN

Don’t you love it when your neighborhood has its very own movie theater? Moreland Theater is your historic, charming single-screen film headquarters that’s currently here to meet your Mission: Impossible 7 needs!

And don’t you love it when your neighborhood is a stone’s throw to a roller coaster and roller skating rink? Look no further than Oaks Park for year-round fun with carnival rides and minigolf to boot!

NATURE

Westmorelandites enjoy proximity to a plethora of natural attractions. Take a dip in the Willamette at the Sellwood Waterfront Park or bring binoculars to Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge which offers opportunities for birdwatching and exploring nature trails.

EXERCISE/SPORTS

Enjoy lawn bowling at Westmoreland Park or dive into Sellwood Park’s public pool after playing pickleball on the new courts!

Also nearby: Golf amid blooms and beavers at Eastmoreland Golf Course or hop on the Springwater Trail for miles and miles (and miles) of paved trail for your fabulously flat cycling, running and walking needs. Westmoreland is a walker’s paradise.

A CENTRALLY-LOCATED GEM

Reed College campus is just to the east. Downtown PDX is a quick jot over a bridge to the west. Transportation is a breeze in Westmoreland, as the neighborhood is well-served by public transit options. Convenient access to major roads and highways makes commuting easy.
